LambdaScience goes Transatlantic and more

Posted on 16th December 2009 by mike in Uncategorized
Hey everyone,
You may have noticed that all the servers have been disappearing. Well, we’re back now.
Last night, all our servers were rearranged. Both our CTF/CP/PL server and Arena/KOTH server have been moved to Iowa in the States to allow a good connection no matter where in the US you’re located.
But there’s more.
During the move, we gained some extra resources, and due to our hosting company recently opening up hosting in London, we took this as an excellent time to expand into Europe!
NOTE: Your existing favourites won’t work, sorry. New addresses:
CP/CTF/PL:
199.102.44.36:27015
Arena/KOTH:
199.102.44.36:27016
UK Server (NEW!):
uk.lambdascience.com:27015
Our move to Europe is still in the testing phases! Please show your support if you want to keep it there.
On a side note – due to our new expansion we are in need of European admins. Please send all applications to lsbot AT live DOT co DOT uk with the title “LS Euro Admin Application”. Admins of any languages are welcome to join, as long as they have a good understanding of English and prior experience as a TF2 server admin (or any other Source based game).

Global messages!

Posted on 30th November 2009 by mike in LambdaScience

Hey everyone, mike here.

We just finished working on a new feature for the servers – Global chat. It’s live now, so feel free to check it out when you have the time.

The feature was made completely in-house, so if you encounter any problems (these are belched out with messages starting Flux E7 or any other E+number), please tell us by leaving a comment or such.

Thanks to Greg and Fraven for preliminary testing!

Later everyone.

LambdaScience.com needs your help

Posted on 11th March 2009 by Greg in Uncategorized

Hey all,

Well, so far, I have been paying for the server that runs both this forum, and the TF2 game server (ranked and quick-spawn).  The TF2 server has been a success, around 1,500 unique players have played on it since it was launched last month.  However I have also noticed that our month bandwidth usage will be 169GB of the 146GB a month we have.  So, I asked my host how much it would be to increase the bandwidth from 150GB a month to 250GB a month, and he said it would be an additional $5 a month.  However, I do not have the money for upgrading our bandwidth, which would be $18.50 a month.  So I’m asking you, that if you enjoy the site and the TF2 server, please donate.  We aren’t asking for a lot, just $5 a month, or even $1 a month.  If we had 4 donors donating $5 a month for example, that would cover the cost of the server.  If we had even more, we could get an additional server, for say Garry’s mod or Half Life 2 Deathmatch.

Just keep in mind, this isn’t required for you to do.  All we ask is that you help support LS’s game servers if you enjoy playing on them.

So, how do you donate?  Just send a donation via paypal to five-of-eight@live.com, any ammount over $1 is helpful.  We are also willing to give back to our donators.

If you have an idea for what donators should get, say reserved slots on our servers, or !votekick ability, join us in the forums at http://forums.lambdascience.com/showthread.php?tid=19 and tell us what you should get for donating.

New map on our TF2 server, and join our game at 23:15UTC

Posted on 24th February 2009 by Greg in Game - Tags: , , , , ,

Hey all,

Just wanted to let you guys know that our TF2 server has a new map, pl_great_heights_b2. It’s a payload map, but is quite a different setting from most maps, being a green mountain rather than the normal tan. It also has lots of areas where you can fall off, excellent for the Force-A-Nature weapon unlock. Anyway, if you want to play it with us, join us tonight at 23:15UTC at tf2.lambdascience.com. We also have fast download enabled as well a bziped maps, so the map (64MB uncompressed 34MB compressed) should download quickly.

Hope to see you there,

LambdaScience.com’s new IRC server

Posted on 16th February 2009 by Greg in chat - Tags: , , , ,

Hey all, Greg here.

Recently one of out admins, Mike has setup an irc server for us. So, if you use an irc client, you can access
irc.lambdascience.com:6667 #lambdascience

Now, if you don’t have one, simply go to http://lambdascience.com/?page_id=21 and you can use the web version that we have (no java required as well).

Now, if you are looking for a chat client, I would recommend mIRC (shareware, but the best IRC client for Windows IMO) or xChat (free, Windows, Mac, Linux but not as powerful).

Hope to see you on the irc chat room. ;)

New Pyro Tennis map on the TF2 server.

Posted on 2nd February 2009 by Greg in Game - Tags: , , , ,

Hey all,

Just wanted to let you know that we now have a new map on our TF2 server (76.74.218.236 or tf2.lambdascience.com), pyro_tennis_remade. Join us on Sunday at 18:00UTC and join as a pyro with the flamethrower (not the backburner, as it has no compression air blast) and join a team. If you don’t know what pyro tennis is, then I would recommend watching this video:
Pyro Tennis

Anyway, hope to see you there then. :)

Before Long Uptime, Comes Short Downtime

Posted on 12th January 2009 by mike in LambdaScience

Sorry if anyone was having trouble connecting to LambdaScience recently. This was tracked down and found to be a nameserver problem, and should be fixed now.

You may have noticed that facility here at LS looks rather… different. That’s right. Our homepage is now a blog! So instead of having to head over to the forum to get the latest news, you can get it here in a much more refined layout.

However, as usual, it’s bad news bears. Recently, the forum’s database was lost, and with no backups recently (bad practise on our side, I’m afraid), the staff here at LambdaScience had no option but the wipe clean. Sorry!

With more news on the forum, I present to you that our address has changed; we’re now located at http://forums.lambdascience.com, so if anyone has bookmarks for the forum, this is what you need to change them to. (more…)
